Savannah Jo Dorsey throws a pitch in Ohio's game against Marshall on Sept. 26. Dorsey has been named MAC East Division's Pitcher of the Week.

Softball: Ohio building up towards conference play at North Carolina

Ohio will travel to North Carolina to play in the NC State Double Tree RDU Invite.

By the time the first pitch is thrown this weekend in North Carolina, Mid-American Conference play will be exactly a week away.

Ohio (11-7) will play up to seven games in that time period, with up to five coming this weekend at the NC State Hyatt Place Invitational.

Ohio's opponents on March 20 have not been announced yet. Because Ohio's home opener against Wright State was cancelled on Wednesday, Ohio coach Jodi Hermanek was not available for comment.

Ohio will have no shortage of rhythm to its game by the time it plays Western Michigan on March 25th. It will also be Ohio's home opener.

The only question is what kind of rhythm that will be.

Up to this point in the season, Ohio has had minor issues on the mound and at the plate.

After the first weekend, Ohio was 3-1 despite scoring just seven runs in four games. Since then, Ohio has averaged five runs a game to answer those questions.

The pitching staff showed vulnerability a couple of weekends ago in Texas, giving up eight home runs in five games. They followed that performance up in Indiana last weekend by allowing nine runs in four games, five of those coming in one extra inning thriller verse Drake University.

Pitcher Savannah Jo Dorsey was named MAC East Pitcher of the week for her contributions to those numbers, which included 30 strikeouts and no earned runs allowed in 17 and 2/3 innings of work.

If Ohio can find a way to get their pitching staff to mesh with their bats in the next seven days, it would be hard pressed to find a conference opponent that wants to play them come late March.
