GoBus traveling to Athens overturns in Akron, leaving some passengers with minor injuries

A total of eight people were on the bus, including seven passengers and the driver.

A GoBus traveling to Athens overturned in Akron on Sunday afternoon, causing two on the bus to be hospitalized with minor injures.

The 911 call for the accident, which took place near the University of Akron, was dispatched to the Akron Police Department at 12:37 p.m., Akron Fire Department Lt. Jeff Schueller said.

A total of eight people were on the bus, including seven passengers and the driver, Schueller said. Two people went to the hospital with minor injuries and two refused treatment.

It was unclear as of press time how many passengers on the bus could have been OU students, if any at all.

GoBus is a rural intercity bus program that has routes that connect Athens to other cities in Ohio, according to its website.

The GoBus schedule from Cleveland to Athens was delayed approximately two and a half hours due to the accident. The delay affected passengers getting on or off in Canton, New Philadelphia, Cambridge, Caldwell, Marietta, Coolville and Athens, according to the GoBus website.

As of press time, the cause of the accident was undetermined.

Gabriella Tagliaferri, an Ohio University freshman studying integrated media and theater, was on a different GoBus also driving to Athens from Cleveland that was stuck in traffic behind the one that overturned.

“It was just so scary because it was, like, what if that was our bus?” Tagliaferri said. “Our bus that we were on was just going to Ohio University and it was completely filled. ... The bus in front of us wasn’t as filled.”

She added that she still plans to take the GoBus in the future.

“It is like a freak accident,” Tagliaferri said. “I’ve been on a GoBus so many times and nothing has happened. There's always a risk with transportation. You can’t be scared of it.”
