Afroman stopped in Athens for a show and Wings Over last weekend

Afroman came to Athens? Here’s what went down in case you missed it.

When Bailey Watroba got a Facebook invite to see Afroman perform in Athens on Saturday, she did not think much of it.

Later on, Watroba and a group of friends decided they wanted to go to Wings Over instead.

“I walked in. I placed my order and I look over, and there’s Afroman sitting in the corner, like by himself eating wings,” Watroba, a sophomore studying strategic communication, said. “I’m like putting two and two together and I’m like, ‘Wait, that’s Afroman.’ ”

Watroba said Afroman, a hip-hop artist best known for his single "Because I Got High," was only interested in eating his barbecue wings that night after his performance.

At one point, he requested some ranch dressing and Watroba offered him hers.

“I went up to him and I was just like, ‘Hey, aren’t you Afroman?’ ” Watroba said. “He was just eating his wings and, like, didn’t really even answer at first.”

Before arriving at Wings Over on Saturday night, Afroman performed at The Venue of Drxvms on 13 W. Stimson Ave. at 6 p.m.

According to Mose Denton, the owner of 24.7 Dreams, a clothing boutique with a venue attached, there was a meet-and-greet with Afroman at Denton's store and a show after.

Denton said his favorite part about Afroman’s visit was him being able to interact with students on campus.

Rylee Crimmel, a junior studying psychology, said he is a big fan of Afroman’s music.

“He’s probably my top played artist on Spotify — well, him and Frank Sinatra,” Crimmel said.

Crimmel and his friend, Will Lammers, a sophomore studying management information systems, said the best song Afroman performed during the show was “She Won’t Let Me F--k.”

“I thought the most interesting thing was every five minutes he would open a new Colt 45 with the old one and keep drinking it,” Lammers said.

During the performance, Afroman was drinking and smoking marijuana on stage, Lammers said.

“He was obviously really drunk,” Crimmel said. “He forgot some of the words to the song ‘Because I Got High,’ and I think it’s because he got high.”
