New year brings new agenda items for Athens City Council

The first committee meeting of the year for Athens City Council is full of new ideas and old projects.

For the second meeting of 2016, Athens City Council's committees will introduce new projects to focus on for the new year.

Joe Lalley, Ohio University's senior associate vice president of Technologies and Administrative Services, will kick off the meeting with a presentation on the memorandum of understanding the university shares with the city.

Former Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl and OU President Roderick McDavis initially signed the memorandum in 2012, and it was to be in effect for four years.

On Dec. 9, an appendix was added to the memorandum as a means of formalizing the procedure in which law enforcement in Athens and on campus report sexual assault, according to a previous Post report.

The memorandum has also been used to assist in the construction of Bobcat Lane and to help the city purchase a new fire truck.

McDavis and current Athens Mayor Steve Patterson are expected to renew the memorandum for an additional four years.

Months after public discussion was heard on the fate of the Athens City Pool, city council aims to accept the Advisory Board's recommendation.

In September, almost a dozen citizens spoke on the topic, most of which supported the idea of an indoor pool.

Brandstetter Carroll, Inc., the company that conducted the feasibility study presented in September, projected an indoor pool would operate at a deficit of $100,000 a year, according to a previous Post report.

East State Street and Franklin Avenue will be discussed by the Transportation Committee as new improvements will soon be proposed for both of those locations.

Other improvements around Athens will include the Luhrig Road Property. Though it lies outside of city limits, Athens City Council hopes to annex the property in the early months of 2016.
