DNA evidence connects two assaults that happened 10 years apart in uptown Athens

DNA evidence from a suspect of a sexual assault on June 20 matched a suspect that had been identified by DNA from a case in 2006.

DNA evidence recently connected two separate but related assaults that took place in Athens nearly 10 years apart.

Now, the Athens Police Department is investigating to find out whose DNA it is.

DNA evidence from a suspect of an attempted assault on June 20 matched a suspect that had been identified by DNA from a rape case in 2006, according to a news release from APD. The release also states that the details of the 2006 and 2015 sexual assaults are "very similar."

Although the DNA evidence matches, the identity of the individual is unknown.

In 2006, a female was walking home from the uptown area when she noticed an unknown white male following her. The suspect illegally entered her home, raped her and fled the scene, according to the release.

The description of the male, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 tall and between 130 to 150 pounds, with short, light-colored hair, matches the description of the male from the 2015 incident.

On June 20 last year, a female was walking home from the uptown area when an individual from behind attempted to sexually assault her, according to the release. The male was scared away by others walking in the area.

APD is seeking information about the suspect who is described as a white male in his late 20s to early 30s. The individual described to be about 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9 and about 160 pounds.

The department is asking anyone who has information related to the two incidents, or knowledge of the identity of the suspect, to contact APD at 740-566-4208.
