Athens City Council to further discussion on International Street Fair

Athens City Council will meet Monday night to further discuss the International Street Fair.

The discussion over the Ohio University International Street Fair will continue at Monday night’s Athens City Council meeting.

Councilwoman Michele Papai, D-3rd Ward and head of the Transportation Committee, said she met with those involved in the event last week, and said they came up with an agreement that they would bring to the committee.

“It’s going to be on the same day, I can tell you that,” Papai said. “There’s no way we can move it.”

Previous discussion highlighted the fact that the International Street Fair is scheduled on the same date of 14Fest.

Papai said OU Police Department’s Chief of Police Andrew Powers was in attendance at the meeting.

“My intent is to make it as safe as we can,” Papai said. “I think that’s what everybody is looking at, at this point.”

She would not provide any further information about the meeting.

Council will also discuss the possibility of purchasing a new salt truck for Athens, as one the city currently owns is on its last leg.

“I’m not sure if that will happen this year,” Papai said. “Maybe, but that process does take a while.”

The Planning and Development Committee, headed by Councilwoman Chris Fahl, D-4th Ward, will host a presentation by Mary Nally, a representative of Community Food Initiatives.

“This group has been very active in doing multiple things with food initiatives, hunger and food insecurity issues around Athens,” Fahl said.

Fahl’s committee will also discuss the possibility of litter citations having an appeal process in the future, as they currently do not.

The Finance and Personnel Committee, headed by Councilman Jeff Risner, D-2nd Ward, will also discuss possible storm tunnel repair and non-union benefits at Monday night’s meeting.
