Multiple dorms on Ohio University's campus experiencing water problems

All four of South Green’s new dorms have been without hot water for about seven days.

All four of South Green’s new dorms have been experiencing hot water issues this Fall Semester, with the latest problem lasting about seven days, according to residents of the halls.

Sowle Hall and Carr Hall residents received an email Wednesday saying the lack of hot water for the past week is due to a steam leak, which is a result of an “aging section” of an underground steam valve.

Other buildings affected by the leak include Morton, Clippinger, Clippinger Annex, Nelson, Luchs, Sowle, Tanaka and Carr, according to an email from Jason Timpson, the assistant director for South Green and Student Staff Recruitment, Selection, and Training.

The email said the water for the buildings will remain out until 10 p.m. Wednesday.

But residents of the new halls and the "front four" — Crawford, Brown, Pickering and McKinnon halls — said hot water has been an issue for the entire Fall Semester.

“It’s ridiculous,” Stephi Laux, a resident of Carr, said. “You think with brand new buildings it wouldn’t be a problem.”

Laux, a sophomore studying early childhood education, said her friends came back from a 5K run Wednesday and couldn’t take a hot shower.

“It’s been a problem since the beginning of the year. We’ve never had hot, hot water,” Laux said.

Halloween was one of the times Laux had to take a freezing cold shower, she said.

“I don’t know why they can’t fix it,” Laux said. “I’m paying that much to live here, and I can’t get hot water.”

Water issues aren’t isolated to just the new South Green dorms.

Paige Hastings, who lives in Crawford Hall, said the water problems are all over South Green.

“This year, the second I get in the shower I turn it all to way to hot, and it's cold the entire time I’m in the shower,” Hastings, a sophomore studying middle childhood education, said.

Hastings' friend Ashley Fistek lives in Carr, and said she’s experiencing the same problem, with added frustrations because of the extra money she paid to live in the dorm.

“We don’t have good showers and things we pay extra for to have,” Fistek said.

Fistek, a sophomore studying early childhood education, couldn’t recall a time this academic year when the water has worked to its full extent.

Brittany Marxen, the Resident Director of the Carr-Sowle Complex, sent an email to residents of the buildings informing them of the ongoing water issues.

“I know you are frustrated with the on-going water issues,” Marxen said in the email. “But until the work is complete, we just need to hang on.”

Marxen added that the residents should utilize the showers at Ping because it hasn’t been affected by the steam issues.

On the other side of campus, Bromley Hall is experiencing water issues, as well.

Cathy Murphy, the residential director of Bromley, sent an email out to residents Wednesday to give an update on the water pressure issues.

The email said there was a problem with the pumps in the basement as well as a loss of water on the upper floors.

“The problem with the plumbing will be fixed at some point today,” Murphy said in an email.

Murphy added that the loud sounds from the pipes some residents have reported should be resolved as soon as the pump is fixed.

“The bad news is that it may take a few hours to fix and build the pressure in the system,” Murphy said in an email.
