Field Hockey: Ohio signs four out-of-state freshmen to begin 2016 early signing period

Ohio signed Karynne Baker, Amy Edgerton, Gabriella Lorzeno and Gabrielle Wink.

With an era led by Adele Sammons and Clarissa Leickly officially closed, the Bobcats have begun their plans for the future in the 2016 early signing period.

Ohio has signed four new freshmen, including Karynne Baker, Amy Edgerton, Gabriella Lorenzo and Gabrielle Wink as part of its 2016 recruiting class.

According to coach Neil Macmillan, the four freshmen will not simply be new pieces on the pitch.

“As a class, I’m really excited to have these four join our program,” Macmillan said. “I think, as a group, they have a great attitude. They work hard, and they’re going to bring a lot more than just their play on the field in the program.”

The new recruits each have several accolades to their names. According to Macmillan, Baker can be a versatile player for the Bobcats, as he mentioned the player from Falls Church, Virginia, could play anywhere on the field.

Along with Baker’s versatility, during Edgerton’s stint at Mercy Academy (Louisville, Kentucky) she garnered first-team all-state honors as a senior and earned a spot on the senior all-star team. She was also awarded a Kentucky Miss Field Hockey nomination.

Lorenzo, from Centereach, New York, was of similar prestige, totaling 27 career goals and 34 career assists. Her mother also played for Ohio from 1984-88. Wink was awarded all-conference selection in 2015, leading the Pinckney Community High School Pirates (Brighton, Michigan) to a Division I league title and state tournament runner-up finish.

As the Bobcats head into a new era, they look to come back from an 8-10 season in which they lost to the Golden Flashes in the 2015 Mid-American Conference semifinal.
