Athens City Council will meet to discuss a number of issues, including lowering APD age limits and extending existing contract with medical insurance provider.
A number of new issues are set to be discussed during tomorrow’s city council meeting.
Councilman Jeff Risner, D-2nd Ward, is introducing a number of ordinances for first reading.
One of those ordinances proposes the City of Athens authorize a contract extension with their third party administrator for medical insurance.
“The way it works is the city has a third party company to actually administer the medical insurance and prescription coverage,” Risner said. “We don’t have any new contract ready, so what we want to do is extend the one that we have right now.”
An issue that was brought to the attention of city council at last week’s meeting will also be up for first reading tomorrow.
The ordinance would allow the city make changes to their current age limitations for entering the Athens City Police Department force.
Risner said with these age limitations in place, it is becoming more difficult to find qualified people to enter the force.

Councilwoman Chris Fahl, D-4th Ward, also will be proposing a number of ordinances for first reading.
One ordinance would call for the city to extend their current franchise agreement with the Ohio Power Company.
Another ordinance, also to be introduced by Fahl, proposes authorizing Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl to file an application and enter into an agreement for Brownfield Cleanup Funds, should he be awarded funds from the Environmental Protection Agency.
