Ohio University's Student Senate to propose budget for Homecoming open house

Ohio University's Student Senate budgeted for a breakfast Saturday for the organization's alumni.

Ohio University's Student Senate is gearing up for Homecoming Weekend by proposing a budget to pay for coffee and donuts, among other items, for a Homecoming open house with senate alumni.

The open house Saturday morning will be held in the senate office to allow past senate members to connect with the current participants.

“The open house is a way for alumni to get together with our senators and commissioners to just chat a little bit about the things they did when they were in office,” Gabby Bacha, senate president, said. “It’s just a way for us to connect on another level. The alumni really enjoy coming into the office and seeing how it’s changed and just kind of reliving old memories here.”

The itemized budget covers sugar, creamer, stirrers, orange juice, cups, napkins and balloons in addition to the coffee and donuts. The total cost of the event is $205.95, with the most expensive item, one urn of coffee, at $75.

Senate will also march in the parade this year after being absent from the lineup in 2014 and participate in a tailgate with the alumni before OU plays Miami at 2 p.m.

Also at Wednesday night’s meeting, the body will aim to continue filling open seats by appointing Vice President of Academic Affairs William Kolenky to serve as an off-campus senator.

“He’s a really dedicated member of senate, he attends every meeting,” Saira Brown, off-campus commissioner, said. “He’s just well-rounded, and I feel like he’d be a great asset.”

Kolenky will keep his non-voting position as vice president of Academic Affairs even if he is appointed to the voting position of off-campus senator.

“We try not to offer multiple positions to people we don’t think can handle it,” Jared Ohnsman, senate vice president, said. “Some people are very motivated and are only involved in senate, so they have time to put forward to hold a voting position and sit on a few internal committees because they know they want to, they can and we trust them in those situations.”

Other resolutions slated for Wednesday night’s meeting include a resolution to form a committee on community service and social activity, and a budget to pay for tables at the Annual Blackburn-Spencer Homecoming Scholarship Pageant.
