Dancers from the Movement Organization practice their routine Sept. 29. The Movement Concert will show Oct. 1 and 2 at the Shirley Wimmer Dance Theater.

Students from Ohio University's Movement group to host annual dance concert

The Movement will put on its annual concert with pieces choreographed by dance majors and non-dance majors.

Students will have the chance to choreograph, design and perform their own numbers even if they are not affiliated within the Ohio University School of Dance.

The Movement, a student organization interested in dance and other representations of movement, will have its annual concert Thursday and Friday.

The performances by students will be done in the Shirley Wimmer Dance Theater in Putnam Hall, and admission is $7.

“The entire concert is produced by the members of the organization,” Grace Nicklos, a senior studying dance and president of the Movement, said. “So (the board members) create the posters and programs and everything.”

The members, Nicklos said, must audition the pieces they created and then she and the board decide which goes into the program.

“Each piece has their own separate rehearsal. ... They usually rehearse two or three times a week,” she said.

There are guidelines in which a performer must follow, such as a time limit and acquiring rights to the music he or she plans to use, Niklos said.

The concert’s program is also intended to be diverse.

“The concert has a few different styles, modern being the most common,” Sydney Sanders, the public relations chair member, said. “I’m just excited to see the show come together as a whole ... to see them in full production on stage with lights and costumes will be really exciting.”

Corrinne Bailey, the fundraising chair, said the Movement is also selling T-shirts during the concert to help cover the concert’s expenses.

“(We’re) trying to get the funds from school — figuring out how to make the show affordable and keep the foundation going,” Bailey said.

The Movement collaborates with the College of Fine Arts' Dance Division by using its facilities and equipment, but it maintains its status as a student organization.

Additionally, the organization hosts classes with guest artists, improv classes, yoga and pilates workshops, dance film viewings, small scale dance concerts and trips to see dance performances.

“We have a lot of different types of events. ... We hold classes so it’s a great opportunity for students, ... especially if they don’t have a major or minor in dance,” Nicklos said.
