Field Hockey: Ohio bounces back, beats Appalachian State 4-0

Ohio was able to bounce back in their second home game.

Ohio’s corner music theme, “A New Game” by Tom Hedden, seemed to be in a continuous repeat Sunday.

With the Bobcats (3-3) shooting 17 corners total — significantly more than the two they shot in Friday's loss against Liberty — Ohio beat Appalachian State (1-5) 4-0, from its play on the corners.

Sophomore Elena Curley scored the Bobcats’ first goal of the game off a corner, as Kristen Buchanan and Hannah Kingsbury assisted.

The Bobcats seemed more aggressive in the circle against the Mountaineers, shooting a season-high 22 shots. Coach Neil Macmillan said the team’s three goals off corners were good for the overall offense.

“We were getting shots off of pretty much every corner.  I think three goals off of corners (were) pretty good,” Macmillan said.

Ohio improved on the defensive end, in comparison to its loss to Liberty, as goalkeeper Lina Trucco only totaled two saves. Ohio also only allowed Appalachian State to shoot five shots.

As the Bobcats entered halftime up 1-0, they continued to rely on their defensive sweepers, not allowing the Mountaineers to get clean shots at the cage. The Mountaineers only had three shots on goal.

With the Bobcats’ defense playing well, the offense was able to continue to be aggressive in the circle. Sophomore Maria Russell scored the Bobcats second goal of the game, tallying her fourth goal this season.

Senior Adele Sammons scored two goals for the Bobcats, with both being assisted by Clarissa Leickly. Leickly would lead the team with two assists for the game.

After getting a redemptive win against the Appalachian State, Ohio will head to Columbus next Sunday to play Ohio State. The Bobcats beat the Buckeyes 1-0 last season at Pruitt Field.
