Ohio University president Roderick McDavis speaks on multiple issues at the faculty senate meeting last year.

Faculty Senate to hear from university officials at first meeting

At their first meeting of the academic year, Faculty Senate members will discuss topics such as faculty compensation and state funding from Ohio's biennial state budget.

While no resolutions are up for consideration at the first Ohio University Faculty Senate meeting of the academic year, several university officials, including President Roderick McDavis, will give presentations.

At Monday's meeting, McDavis and Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit are expected to discuss the “various requirements and procedures” caused by Ohio’s biennial state budget, Faculty Senate Chair Beth Quitslund said in an email.

The budget, signed into law in June, will prevent tuition increases for in-state students for two years and increase state funding for OU and other state-funded universities, according to a previous Post report.

Joe Lalley, senior associate vice president of technologies and administrative services, will discuss a newly proposed “Mass Communication Policy” for the university, Quitslund said. Lalley will also talk about some of the construction and facilities improvements completed this summer.

John Day, associate provost for Academic Budget and Planning, will walk faculty through the implementation of the Faculty Compensation Initiative, which aims to increase faculty compensation at OU.

Quitslund also said nominations for two faculty awards, the Presidential Teacher Award and Provost’s Award for Excellence in teaching, are due Monday.

While the Presidential Teacher Award is an award for Group I faculty, the Provost’s Award is new this year and aims to provide equal recognition for Group II faculty.

Group I, or tenure-track, are faculty members who have reached the highest promotions as a faculty member. Group II faculty members are primarily instructional faculty, dedicated to teaching courses at OU.

No resolutions are coming forward at this month’s meeting, Quitslund said, but the presentations will provide an “opportunity for discussion.”

“As always, the Senate meeting is open to all faculty as well as other members of the university and community,” Quitslund said.

Faculty Senate is OU’s representative body that acts on behalf of all faculty on matters related to university planning, governance and resource allocation.
