Unopposed graduate student senate elections end

Graduate Student Senate has new executives for the 2015-16 academic year.

The results of the Graduate Student Senate elections were announced Thursday night, but came as no surprise as every candidate ran unopposed.

“I'm very excited. I hoped it would turn out this way, but I ran unopposed so it’s not exactly big news to me," Vice President of Administration-elect Liudmila Pestun said. "I'm excited...I feel like I can handle it and I think I'm going to be good at it."

There will be some reshuffling on the GSS roster next year but one, President Carl Edward Smith III, will serve a second term in the same role.

Margaret Clark and Pestun served on GSS this past year, but will take on different roles for the upcoming year. Clark will be the college senator for the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs. Previously, Clark was the GSS vice president of legislative affairs and Pestun was the representative of international development studies program.

GSS will also see some fresh faces for next year.

Rose Troyer, who served as the chief of staff for undergraduate Student Senate, is going to be the vice president of legislative affairs.

Sarah Kaplan will serve as the vice president for communication and Shaneil Taylor will be the senator for International Studies.

The race was mostly decided when the candidates were announced. The only contested position was vice president of communications until Chelsea Foster withdrew from the race earlier this week.

In one of its first moves, GSS will be funding an event called OUr Grad Fest at TailGreat Park to "mingle, meet” and “network” with their fellow graduate students, Kaplan said.

“We have graduate students who are obtaining their degrees and leaving and we want to honor them and we want to honor the undergraduate seniors who are graduating and hopefully recruit some of them into GSS," Kaplan said. "Come out, have a good time and enjoy the cherry blossoms."
