Student groups to host “First General Assembly”

The OU Student Union will host a “First General Assembly” as part of a collaboration with several campus student groups.

Students will gather at Scripps Amphitheater on Friday afternoon to react to the university’s decision not to pursue the purchase of 31 Coventry Lane and reflect on the school year.

The event, dubbed the “First General Assembly,” will be hosted by the Ohio University Student Union in collaboration with several student groups and feature live bands and free food.

F--k Rape Culture, New BLAC, the Feminist Equality Movement and the OU Sierra Student Coalition will all be involved in the event.

The event is a follow-up to last month’s “Bat Rally,” where students protested the university’s decision to relocate the president’s residence to 31 Coventry Lane as part of a lease-to-buy agreement that would have cost the university $1.2 million if purchased.

On April 14, Stephen Golding, vice president of Finance and Administration, announced he would not recommend the Board of Trustees and the OU Foundation to pursue the purchase of 31 Coventry Lane.

At Friday’s event, students will vote on how to spend the “freed-up $1.2 million,” according to the event’s Facebook page.

“Come enjoy some pre-finals food, live local bands and, oh yeah, democracy,” the page says.

The event will take place at 4 p.m. and is open to faculty and staff as well.
