Jameis Winston was the first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft on Thursday night.
Winston played both football and baseball at Florida State. One of his teammates was current Ohio pitcher Evan Geist.
Although Geist transferred to Athens, he was a pitcher with Winston, and said the No. 1 pick was a great teammate.
“He was very competitive, he wanted to win,” Geist said. “All the stuff you see about him as far as leading in the locker room and stuff, that’s how he is. From day when he came in for the spring, you could tell he was on it."
Winston got a new phone number recently, but Geist was able to contact him and wished the new Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback good luck.
“Obviously there have been some mistakes made, but he’s a guy you want on your team.”
This season, Geist is 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA. He’s also thrown 33 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched.
Ohio plays Toledo on Friday night at Bob Wren Stadium. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
