News outlets should realize importance of Veterans & Military Student Services Center

To the Editor,

Although there were several photographers and reporters at a memorable event at Baker Center on March 26, it did not receive any news coverage. It was the grand opening of the Veterans & Military Student Services Center. It was named in honor of retired Brigadier General James M. Abraham (an Athens native) and the late retired Colonel Arlene F. Greenfield. Both were Ohio University graduates and are credited with their generous contributions to the university and community.

Those who should be commended for their work toward the event includes the planning committee who organized the event, the welcoming Presentation of the Military Colors, opening remarks by OU President Roderick McDavis and Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit.

Before the ribbon cutting and open house, the Singing Men of Ohio sang the “Star Spangled Banner” to the large crowd that attended. It was the best rendition of our National Anthem ever heard since Whitney Houston sang it at a former Super Bowl game. A demo could be sent to bowl officials with the possibility of it being performed at next year’s Super Bowl.

For those who missed the opening and are interested in seeing it, it can be viewed on the Internet or by visiting Baker Center.

Gen. Abraham and his wife, Irene, reside in Gahanna, Ohio, where city hall is named after him.

RJ Abraham is an Athens County resident and brother of Brigadier General James M. Abraham, who is mentioned in this letter.
