A gas line was struck beneath Richland Avenue early Wednesday afternoon, leaving 130 to 150 Athens residents without service, a news release from Columbia Gas of Ohio said.
Athens Fire Department Capt. Bruce Smith said the line broke at 12:14 p.m. when construction crews were installing a utility pole.
Two fire trucks and several police cars were dispatched to the scene to block off the road while company trucks turned off the gas lines.
Crews were out making repairs as of 5 p.m., the company said, and hope to finish by later this evening.
Gas is currently shut off on Richland Avenue between Dairy Lane and Canterbury Street.
Services will be restored to homes and businesses soon after the repairs are completed, the release said.
