Ohio University normally does not have a double-reed choir, but during the Flute Fest / Clarinet Gala / Double Reed Extravaganza, these students are finally getting their chance to play together.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. in the lobby of Glidden Hall and costs $20 for people to attend the events for the entirety of the day. The event is a “nice form of outreach to the community,” said •Rebecca Rischin, a clarinet professor.

The event includes master classes for students, choirs featuring the different instruments, visiting artist recitals and a faculty performance.

“The woodwind instruments are closely related so we often collaborate together in events and we also perform together as faculty members,” said •Michele Fiala, associate professor of oboe.

The annual event originally began with a focus on a single instrument but has grown over the years to incorporate the different woodwinds, Rischin said.

The choirs aren’t made up of just college students, however.

“We had auditions all over the state and also in West Virginia for these honors choirs, which are comprised by outstanding high school and college students from throughout the region,” Rischin said.

Faculty members are responsible for recruiting their own students, Fiala said. The oboe department has about eight students, which is a “strong studio,” she added.

“It’s both for recruiting for the outside students and so our students have the opportunity to preform in these choirs too. … Our students love the chance to get to perform together. … It’s an exciting opportunity for them also,” Fiala said.
