The Post’s top editors write that a fundraising campaign to raise money for renovations to the women’s basketball team’s locker room is a good idea.
Ohio University’s women’s basketball coach Bob Boldon signed a contract extension earlier this month that will keep him leading the Bobcats through April 2020.
In Boldon’s contract, Ohio Athletics vowed to begin a fundraising campaign totaling at least $25,000 for renovations to the women’s basketball team’s locker room.
This is a good use of donor money, and one that will show a sign of appreciation for work well done this past season.
It’s also in line with recent Athletics fundraising campaigns that have been kick-started in the midst of success by some of Ohio’s other sports teams. The football and men’s basketball teams’ locker rooms were renovated recently.
We hope that donors will step up and help finance similar locker room improvements for the women’s team as well.

And the women’s team deserves it. University officials say there’s a correlation between improved facilities and an improved on-field or on-court performance, particularly when discussing the Walter Fieldhouse and the proposed Sook Academic Center. The women’s team delivered big this year, and it will likely be remembered as Ohio’s most successful Division 1 program this academic year.
A March 2012 Post story detailing improvements to the men’s basketball team’s locker room states that Athletics had recently made improvements to the swimming and diving, volleyball and wrestling locker rooms. It also states that renovations to the men’s basketball team’s locker room were projected to cost an estimated $300,000 — much more than the minimum $25,000 campaign for the women’s team’s locker room.
The story states that a renovated locker room for the women’s team was on Athletics’ radar. We’re glad to hear that it will soon come to fruition.
