MAC Tournament heads to Cleveland

Although neither Bobcats team will be competing, the MAC Tournament will resume Wednesday in Cleveland for the second round.

Although the Ohio men’s basketball team was ousted from the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Monday and the Bobcats women don’t play until Friday, four men’s and women’s teams will resume play Wednesday in Cleveland.

Women

No. 5 Western Michigan vs. No. 9 Central Michigan — noon

The Broncos defeated 12th-seeded Bowling Green 65-42 on Monday in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and led by as many as 30 points midway through the second half.

The Chippewas edged eighth-seeded Northern Illinois by 49-44, despite playing on the road and being outscored in the second half.

The winner will advance to play fourth-seeded Buffalo on Wednesday at noon. Winner of that game will then play first-seeded Ohio on Friday. 

No. 6 Eastern Michigan vs. No. 7 Toledo — 2:30 p.m.

The Eagles are coming off a 70-52 win against 11th-seeded Kent State after outscoring the Golden Flashes by 19 points in the second half.

The Rockets never trailed 10th-seeded Miami and cruised to a 62-47 victory Monday. Toledo split its season series with Eastern Michigan.

The winner will advance to play third-seeded Akron, which won last year’s MAC Tournament and earned the conference’s NCAA Tournament bid.

Men

No. 5 Bowling Green vs. No. 8 Eastern Michigan — 6:30 p.m.

The Falcons gave 12th-seeeded Ball State its 17th consecutive loss Monday in a 88-75 finish.

The Eagles needed overtime to defeat Miami, but edged the ninth-seeded RedHawks 62-61 and clinched 20 wins in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1997-98.

The winner will advance to play at the same time Thursday against No. 4 Toledo, which is on the top half of the bracket with No. 1 Central Michigan.

No. 6 Western Michigan vs. No. 7 Akron — 9 p.m.

After defeating the 11th-seeded Bobcats 82-74 on Monday, the Broncos will return to Cleveland with hopes of repeating as MAC Champions.

Akron jumped out to a 33-6 lead and didn’t look back on its way to a 76-52 win against 10th-seeded Northern Illinois.

The winner will advance to play on Thursday against No. 3 Kent State, which is on the same half of the bracket as No. 2 Buffalo.
