Ohio University President Roderick McDavis speaks on multiple issues at a Faculty Senate meeting during Fall Semester 2014.

Faculty to introduce a resolution to update handbook with sexual misconduct policy

Faculty Senate will propose an update to the Faculty Handbook in hopes of aligning it with Ohio University’s current sexual misconduct policy at Monday’s Faculty Senate meeting.

The changes proposed by the resolution would update the handbook on definitions of sexual misconduct and methods of reporting it, said Ben Bates, associate professor of communication studies.

Faculty Senate Chair Beth Quitslund said the resolution is more of a housekeeping measure and will not create new policy.

“The handbook right now reflects terminology and policy that is no longer current at the university,” Quitslund said in an email. “We are simply bringing the handbook into alignment with the policy as it is now and/or will be as soon as the current revisions are approved.”

The resolution will have its first reading Monday, so it will not be voted on until a later meeting.

The Facilities and Finance Committee will also introduce two, similar resolutions that deal with faculty compensation.

The committee will make recommendations about how deans should consult with faculty before making decisions about Faculty Compensation Initiative raises. It will also recommend how raises should be distributed this year.

The Executive Committee will hear a first reading of a resolution that would temporarily allow for health benefits policies that contradict the handbook. Quitslund said this is a result of old and incorrect wording in the handbook that hasn’t been changed yet.
