Athens City Council members convene for their weekly council meeting where they write, discuss and adopt ordinances into code.

Council to discuss Ohio Brew week and other festivities

Athens City Council will view a series of presentations on classic Athens celebrations.

While Ohio University students are away, Athens “townies” reclaim Uptown for a few fests of their own.

Athens City Council members will be discussing a few longstanding Athens summertime traditions at their Monday night meeting.

Council members will be viewing a series of presentations concerning Bounty on the Bricks, Ohio Brew Week and Boogie on the Bricks.

Bounty on the Bricks first began in 2013 as a way to raise awareness and money to combat food insecurity in Athens, according to previous Post reports.

Participants gathered on Court Street to share in a community meal in August of 2013, with the potential to raise around $75,000 to aid those in need. Money raised went to a grant program through the Athens Foundation that helped benefit local food pantries.

Council members will also view a presentation on Ohio Brew Week.

The festival — which in recent years had brought 41 breweries to the bricks — will celebrate its 10th anniversary in Athens this year.

The event typically takes place for over a week in the summer and sees most beer venders on East State St. and in the Uptown area.’

In previous years, Jackie O’s — the only brewery in town — celebrated by releasing new brews. Last year, it released Secret HOPeration and After Hours in collaboration with two other breweries.

A third Court Street celebration has also made its way to city council’s agenda.

Boogie on the Bricks, an event that turns the normal Court Street traffic of college students into an art-filled street festival, will be celebrating its 11th year this summer.

The event has included live music, art sales and alcohol — turning Court Street into a “beer garden,” Scott Kreps, the event coordinator, said in a previous Post report.

Though the event appeals to Athens’ bar crawl-crowd, it also contained family-friendly activities like a bounce house and face painting in recent years.

On the less festive side of things, council will also view a presentation from the Athens Economic Development Council.
