Power restored near Richland Avenue after late-night fire

Two power lines had fallen Monday night, authorities had said.

After two downed electrical lines caused a small fire near the roundabout on Richland Avenue Monday night, an American Electric Power representative reported that more than 900 were without power.

Athens Fire Department Lt. Doug Ford said the first downed line "lit the hillside on fire." The department arrived on scene around 10:40 p.m.

The second line fell just behind the roundabout across from the Ohio University Inn, Ford said. The hotel was not impacted.

The AEP representative, who asked to remain unnamed, said 941 customers are without power in the area around Richland Avenue. Power was expected to be restored by 1:30 a.m.

As of 11:55 a.m. Tuesday, AEP's online power-outage reporting system showed the power was restored.
