Taylor Smith, freshman, clears the high jump during the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational Saturday, April 5, 2014.

Ohio places ninth at Thundering Herd Invitational

A tough meet at Marshall had the Bobcats finish ninth, their lowest placing spot so far in the season.

The Ohio track and field team took ninth place this weekend at the Thundering Herd Invitational at Marshall.

Despite this being the lowest-placing spot the Bobcats have had so far this season, much of their competition was not within the MAC, but rather Division I teams that they have not had much experience with.

Ohio sophomore Taylor Smith led the team with her fourth place performance in high jump at 1.65 meters. Fellow sophomore Tara Tollett also snagged a top spot in the 5000-meter run, placing fifth at 17:52.44. In the same event, juniors Kayla Scott and Peyton Adkins took seventh and eighth place, respectively.

Junior Tessa Weigand placed ninth in the mile run while fellow junior Hayley Stegemiller also took ninth in her event, the 800-meter run.

Per coach Clay Calkins’ prediction, freshman Jordan Porter stepped it up this weekend, placing sixth in shot put having thrown 13.12 meter — an improvement in comparison to her 11.84-meter throw last week at the Tom Wright Classic.

Lastly, Ohio’s 400-meter relay team — made up of freshman Kaitlyn Logan, sophomores Mackenzie Rankin and Amanda Sach, and Stegemiller — placed 10th in its race. Their final time was 4:06.78.

Up next, the Bobcats prepare for the Youngstown State National this weekend in hopes of continuing to improve upon their meet results early in the season.
