The weed measure is expected to be on the Ohio ballot this November.
If an amendment to Ohio’s constitution passes on this November’s ballot, Athens would be one of only a few counties in the state to house a marijuana testing site.
The pro-legalization group ResponsibleOhio, partly led by Athens-native executive director Ian James, is pushing the amendment.
A summary of the proposed amendment on ResponsibleOhio’s website lists Athens County as one of a minimum of five “regional Marijuana Testing Facilities that will be responsible for regular testing of the chemical compounds found within the product (marijuana) grown and produced in the state.”
Other testing will sites include Lorain, Mahoning, Scioto and Wood counties — specifically “situated near colleges and universities,” according to the amendment summary online.
The Athens testing site would be tasked with reporting chemical compounds that would facilitate proper labeling of the marijuana substances, according to ResponsibleOhio’s website.
The website reads that testing facilities would be prohibited from actually selling marijuana.
Under the proposed amendment, adults 21 years old or older would be permitted to purchase marijuana.
