Athens County Commissioners will meet Thursday morning for their weekly meeting to discuss possible renovations to the EMS station, filling county planner position and hiring a new position at the 911 offices.
Both Athens County Commissioners and Athens County Emergency Services Chief Rick Callebs are collaborating to make alterations to the Athens County EMS station to create room for the new incoming ambulances.
The new squad trucks are supposedly larger than the previous ambulances, Commissioner Charlie Adkins said.
“We are looking to enlarge the openings for the entrances for the squads to make room for the new vehicles, which will be bigger,” Adkins said.
The county has yet to order new ambulances, but will be looking to make those changes before making the order, Adkins said.
Advances in the plan will be discussed at the commissioners’ meeting Thursday morning.
Dan Pfeiffer, director of Athens County 911, will be present at the meeting.
“He wants to hire a part-time clerk’s position at 911,” Adkins said.
Pfeiffer will be looking to obtain approval for the personnel decision.
“Right now, there is only one full-time clerk position,” said Commissioner Chris Chmiel. “So hiring the part-time employee will serve as a backup if the full-time employee is unavailable.”
The decision will be made under executive review — meaning only Pfeiffer and the county commissioners will be present in the room to make the decision on whether the position will be approved.
“Me and the commissioner will discuss it tomorrow; I can’t say much about the specifics of the position,” said Pfeiffer.

The commissioners will also be conducting a road viewing Tuesday morning, visiting a piece of road on State Route 144 in Bern Township.
“I think this is the most important thing we will be discussing tomorrow,” said Chmiel. “A lady in the area is asking us to put in a ‘No Engine Brake’ sign so truckers won’t use their engine brake.”
The formal request stems from complaints that the use of the engine brake is “too loud.”
“She is from the area and the engine brake causes a really loud noise when the trucks use them,” Chmiel added. “Tomorrow we will just check it out and see where it goes.”
The vacant county planner position also could be filled soon, with interviewing beginning Friday.
Each commissioner has chosen some of their top applicants and will conduct interviews to fill the position soon.
