OU’s Southern campus was on lockdown Wednesday
Ohio University’s Southern campus in Ironton was on lockdown
Wednesday afternoon after police received a call regarding a man with a gun.
Ohio University’s Southern campus was locked down at 4:18 p.m. while the Ironton Police Department and Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers investigated reports of a man with a gun on campus.
The Ohio University Police Department became aware of the situation at approximately 4:30 p.m., OUPD Lt. Tim Ryan said. The department then contacted Ironton’s police department to verify the situation and to obtain updated information.
The lockdown was lifted at approximately 5:30 p.m. after local law enforcement and the OSHP determined the individual was an armored car security guard, Ryan said.
OU’s Southern campus was founded in 1956. The 11-acre land was previously used as a quarry, a landfill and a field until the university acquired it in 1982, according to a previous Post article.
OU’s Athens campus was not affected, according to a tweet issued by OUPD.
Classes resumed on OU’s Southern campus at 7 p.m.
