OU officials to brief Senate on rollout of tobacco-free policy

Student Senate will vote Wednesday to keep a resolution that holds general body meetings once every two weeks. Previously, meetings were held every week.

Student Senate will vote Wednesday to continue a resolution that would keep its general body meetings to once every other week.

The policy, implemented last semester, calls for a general body meeting every other week and meetings with senators’ academic associations on the off-weeks.

“Student Senate meeting every week takes up a lot of time that could be spent organizing for students,” according to the resolution.

If the resolution passes, senate will hold eight general body meetings this semester. In the past, Student Senate held a general body meeting every week.

Student Senate is voting on the resolution again because the one passed last semester did not specify meeting dates for Spring Semester.

“We just wanted to clarify the schedule for this semester,” said senate Vice President Caitlyn McDaniel.  “We want to make sure everyone is on the same page.”

Also at Wednesday night’s meeting, Ohio University officials will be presenting on the university’s Tobacco Free Initiative.

The initiative aims to remove all tobacco from campus beginning in the fall of 2015. Cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos, hookah smoked products and oral tobacco will not be permitted on campus grounds.

Before Wednesday’s general body meeting, some senators will be traveling to Columbus to meet with state legislators to discuss tuition hikes, funding for higher education and the compensation of student workers and top OU administrators.
