Meet the members of the Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees will meet thursday and Friday to approve tuition increases and other changes.

The Board of Trustees oversees many university functions, hires faculty — including the president — and approves all finances.

Ohio University’s Board of Trustees will meet for its first meeting of the year Thursday and Friday in Walter Hall to discuss a variety of topics.

Here are the current members of the decision-making board:

David Brightbill, chair

In addition to being the chair of the Board of Trustees, Brightbill has also served as the executive director of Community Action Program Corporation of Washington-Morgan County since 1987. The agency is a nonprofit organization that aims to help low-income people in the area. Brightbill serves on the executive committee of the board, a group that works closely with OU President Roderick McDavis to appoint executive officers and address business matters that do not fall under the other committees. He graduated from OU in 1970, and his term expires in June.

David Wolfort, vice chair

Wolfort has served as the president and chief operating officer of Olympic Steel, a steel processor centered in Highland Hills, Ohio, since 2001 and 1995, respectively. He is also the director of the Metal Service Center Institute and a regional board member of the Northern Ohio Anti-Defamation League. He earned his undergraduate degree from OU in 1974.

Sandra J. Anderson

Anderson received her bachelor’s degree from OU in 1973 before attending law school at Northwestern University. She was a partner at the law firm Vorys, Sater, Seymour, and Pease, LLP for more than 30 years. Anderson chairs the University Resources Committee and serves on the •Audit Committee.

Cary Cooper

Cooper received his B.S. from OU in 1964 and went on to earn his law degree from the University of Toledo in 1969. He currently practices law in Toledo with Marshall & Melhorn, LLC. He works mainly with business and health care cases. Cooper sits on the Governance Committee and the University Academics Committee.

N. Victor Goodman

Goodman received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his law degree and Juris Doctor, a professional doctorate degree, from Harvard University. He also received an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from OU in 2004. He is currently a partner at Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan, & Aronoff, LLP. He chairs the Audit Committee and was previously a board member from 1994 to 2001, and a chair from 1999 to 2000.

Janetta King

King graduated from Pepperdine University, where she received a degree in both political science and English. She then worked for the U.S. Department of State in Washington and served as deputy chief of staff for policy for former Governor Ted Strickland. In 2011, she founded Innovation Ohio, a nonpartisan organization that aims to strengthen the middle class and create equal opportunities. She chairs the University Academics Committee and serves on the Executive and Governance committees.

Kevin B. Lake

Dr. Lake is a physician in a Columbus family practice and medical director of Cardinal Medical Group, LLC. He was previously appointed to Bowling Green State University’s Board of Trustees in 2009. He received his medical degree from OU’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1992. He serves on the University Academics and Audit Committees.

Dave Scholl

Scholl serves as a partner at Athenian Venture Partners, a company that invests in healthcare and information technology. Scholl chairs the Governance Committee and sits on the University Resources Committee. His term ends in 2021.

Janelle Simmons

Simmons promotes the advancement of minority talent in business through her role as the Chief Diversity Officer for Limited Brands, Inc. She received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from OU and a business management certificate from Ohio State University. She serves on the Governance and University Academics committees.

Other members

The board is also comprised of two national trustees, Peggy Viehweger and J. Patrick Campbell, two student trustees, Keith Wilbur and Sharmaine Wilcox and an alumni representative, Julie Mann Keppner.
