Local art institutions gear up for new exhibitions, spring season

This semester, the Trisolini Gallery, the Kennedy Art Museum, and the Dairy Barn will all be having new exhibits for people to check out.

Spring brings a new selection of art exhibitions to explore in local galleries. From sculpture to photography, here are some options for Athens art-lovers to peruse.

The Dairy Barn Arts Center, 800 Dairy Lane

The Dairy Barn will celebrate the Athens Voices USA 2015 exhibition this weekend, an all media juried exhibition which features artists who live within 30 miles of Athens communities in the U.S. The exhibition will run January 17 through March 15.

“We anticipate nearly 20,000 visitors in 2015 with local artists featured in Athens Voices and our internationally known Quilt National this summer,” said Jane Forrest Redfern, executive director for the Dairy Barn Arts Center. “We will get visitors from all over the world.”

On February 6, there will be an event called Uncorked: An Evening of Art and Wine where visitors can journey through the featured wine selections of the evening and speak with wine representatives while enjoying the Athens Voices exhibit.

One of the last events for the semester is the Dairy Barn Fest, a seasonal shopping tradition featuring over 44 artists and artisans from the region. Visitors can browse unique items on the first floor of the Dairy Barn Arts Center.

Trisolini Gallery, 405 Baker University Center

The Trisolini Gallery has many upcoming events and exhibits this spring rotating through the gallery.

“The spring is reserved for thesis exhibitions and so each week the Trisolini Galleries will host new exhibitions,” said Petra Kralickova, director of exhibitions for the Trisolini Gallery as well as the curator for the Kennedy Museum of Art. “Both graduate and undergraduate students will share the spotlight and present a thesis exhibition which serves as the final examination for their degree.”

Thesis projects will encompass a variety of genres including sculpture, photography, integrated media and ceramics.

Kennedy Museum of Art, The Ridges

Upcoming events and exhibits at the Kennedy Museum of Art include three Sunday Family Art Encounters on February 8, March 8 and April 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. where visitors can view open studio activities related to exhibitions on the second floor of the museum.

“Some of the exhibitions at KMA will feature works from the permanent collection such as the prints by Sheldon Berlyn and the Navajo Wearing Blankets, and the Zuni Fetish Carvings,” Kralickova said. “The American Studio Glass exhibition will come to us from Huntington Museum of Art from Jan. 30 to June 28, featuring artists who worked during the American Studio Glass Movement and continue working today.”

Lori Spencer, the administrative associate for the Kennedy Museum of Art said organizers expect well over 150 people to attend exhibition openings.

“We believe the most popular exhibitions will be ones that involve students,” she added.

There are also three Inside/Outside Art Talks on March 5, April 2 and May 7 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. where visitors can see works by photographer, Kenner Bush, painter, Barbara Kostohryz, a third guest to be announced.

The last event is a Friends of Kennedy Jewelry Sale for Moms Weekend. All events take place at Kennedy Museum of Art and are free and open to the public, unless otherwise stated.
