Letter: McDavis, students should look toward the future

Ohio University is developing students who can make transformational change in our community. Many of our colleges and schools continue to receive national recognition for their academic programs and talented faculty.

To the Editor,

I read with interest the Op-Ed of Dr. Richard Vedder regarding President McDavis’ tenure as president. As a visiting professor for the past 18 months, I have encountered a different university. In class, students have demonstrated tremendous critical thinking skills and subject matter expertise. The effort students put into their education is inspiring. Many work and are also involved in student organizations which requires solid time management skills. Ohio University is developing students who can make transformational change in our community. Many of our colleges and schools continue to receive national recognition for their academic programs and talented faculty. Has President McDavis’ tenure been perfect? No. Is there room for improvement? Always. I encourage all of us on campus to look forward, and in doing so, we must provide solutions to the issues and concerns of our students, faculty and staff. Look ahead and not in the rearview mirror.

Thomas Costello is a visiting lecturer and faculty in residence at the Scripps College of Communication’s Communication Studies.
