We encourage all students to attend the #handsupwalkout Summit — a follow-up to the Occupy Baker protest from last week — at 7 p.m. in Baker University Center Theatre.
The Occupy Baker protest stems from the verdict to not indict police officer Darren Wilson for fatally shooting Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri in August.
Organizers of the #handsupwalkout Summit will discuss the demands made during the Occupy Baker protests, some of which include mandating that Ohio University initiate cultural competence classes for students, residential assistants and faculty, better minority representation at OU and increasing diversity of staff. All are worthwhile causes.
A problem clearly stated is a problem half-solved.
Of course, not all of the demands made by activists are reasonable, such as disarming Ohio University and Athens Police officers. Those who do not support the actions of the activists should show up and start a legitimate dialogue rather than simply bashing the organizers on social media.
Regardless of your feelings about the protests, it is conversations such as those that help move our university forward.
