Editorial: Even small scholarships can be helpful

Our senior editor wrote on Wednesday about the importance of small scholarships for students who drop out of college because of relatively small debts.

These scholarships have become popular at other universities in Ohio, such as Akron, Kent State and Hiram College, as was reported in The Wall Street Journal. Those colleges found many students in danger of dropping out because they couldn’t scrape together money for books and classes, among other debts.

Ohio University helped 55 students last year who were in need of emergency scholarships.

About $55,000 was spent on those 55 students.

If a student approaches a financial aid officer with such a problem, money can be distributed within days.

We are glad OU offers such assistance to students who need it, but we hope the university can ramp up its efforts in letting students know about this form of assistance. Students should be aware of the resources available to them to ease their financial burdens.
