There are various options for those seeking a hot meal in Athens over the Thanksgiving break.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a family to turn to on Thanksgiving, but two local churches are ensuring Athens residents in need will receive a hot meal.
United Campus Ministries, 18 N. College St., will host a meal at 5:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving in place of the organization’s regular Thursday supper.
The church’s meals are put on completely by volunteers. They also offer a Saturday lunch, which begins at noon.
For Athens Church of Christ, 785 W. Union St., its Thanksgiving meal will take place during its regular community meal time — Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
“There’s usually a pretty good turnout,” saidRachel Everett, church secretary. “We have our regulars that come in and families that might not ordinarily come.”
Everett said the meal is a “big production” and uses many church volunteers to make it happen.
“We have some community members that come time to time to volunteer, but it’s mostly staffed by church members.”
Many restaurants in town will also be open for the holiday including Union Street Diner.
