Police Blotter: A couple scary situations with knives

This week yielded a couple scary situations for local law enforcement, both involving women wielding knives.

This week yielded a couple scary situations for local law enforcement, both involving women wielding knives.

The first occurred on Wednesday when Athens Police officers were called to the area near the intersection of North Congress and Carpenter streets, according to an APD report. The report shows that a female was chasing a man and threatening another subject with a knife at about 3:15 p.m.

Once officers arrived on the scene, the report said, she was arrested and charged with aggravated menacing and obstruction of official business.

The other knife-related incident took place two days later on Torch Road in Coolville. An Athens County Sheriff's deputy was dispatched after hearing a report of a woman threatening to harm herself, according to a sheriff’s report.

When the deputy arrived, they realized the subject had harmed herself and would need to be sent to OhioHealth O’Bleness Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

The woman then became enraged due to the fact that she would be sent to the hospital. This prompted her to aggressively grab a knife and repeatedly make cutting motions towards her throat and arms, according to the report.

But she didn’t stop there. She also lunged at the deputy with a stabbing motion and threatened to throw the knife at an Ohio State Highway Patrol Officer.

Backup deputies ended up tazing the woman into submission, and she was handcuffed, according to the report.

On Ohio University’s campus in the five-day period from Oct. 15 to Sunday, there were only three alcohol and three drug-related citations. However, four thefts were reported this week.

Reports show one male student reported his wallet was swiped while in class Wednesday afternoon, but the three others all reported multiple stolen items, including one that took place in a Voigt Hall dorm room on Tuesday morning. Another theft occurred in the women’s locker room of Nelson Commons late Friday night.
