A window was broken on Acacia's fraternity house at 36 E. State St. early Friday morning, according to the Athens Police Department.
APD was notified of the vandalism, which caused an estimated $100 in damage, by members of Acacia shortly after 1:40 a.m. when the incident occurred, according to fraternity President Nicholas Loree.
Police determined that there were no signs of forced entry. The object used to break the window could not be located. With no suspects, APD closed the case.
Loree said it seems a trash can caused the damage.
“It looks as though someone dumped out one of our trash cans and then threw it at one of our windows,” Loree said in an email. “Nothing crashed through the window. So, I can only assume that the trash can that had been emptied was what was used to smash our window.”
This act comes shortly after a similar incident. The kitchen window in the basement of Sigma Kappa’s sorority house was broken Sept. 23. However, Loree said the occurrences are unlikely to be connected.
“(It was) probably just some drunk kids displacing their anger on some windows,” Loree said. “We can only hope that this does not become a pattern of vandalism.”
According to Loree, Acacia has mostly brushed off the incident. They were considering installing security cameras, but he said that seemed unnecessary for such an “isolated incident.”
“We are not in the business of guessing who did it or assigning blame, we just hope that our house is not vandalized again in the interest of the safety of our members and the upkeep of our facilities,” Loree said.
The window is currently covered by a canvas.
