Letter: Debbie Phillips contradicts herself

Letter to the editor about how Debbie Phillips does not vote for what she claims to support.

To the Editor,

Just a few days ago, I had the privilege to attend the Athens County League of Women Voters 94th District State House candidate Forum at the county library. As I was sitting through the debate, I noticed several flaws in Representative Phillips’ arguments. She claims she is an advocate for the environment, but that could not be further from the truth. If we look at her record, we can take note that she has voted against provisions to protect our water and land during the hydraulic fracturing process. Debbie Phillips voted against HB 473, which would limit the amount of water able to be withdrawn from Lake Erie for the purpose of hydraulic fracturing. She explained that we should increase the state severance tax on oil and gas, but again, she voted against HB 375, which would increase taxes on hydraulic fracturing within the state. When it comes to combating the illicit and illegal drug epidemic in our district, she has spoken differently than how she voted. She claims that she worked to stop pill mills and help those who suffer from drug abuse, but she voted against HB 369 that would force addiction clinics to expand the number of treatment services. But don’t think it’s over yet. Debbie Phillips says she supports the Common Core standards and curriculum, yet she voted against SB 316, the bill that creates the 3rd grade reading guarantee test, required under the new Common Core standards.

Debbie Phillips has consistently spun her record, for the sole objective of appealing to her district. If all of this information is STILL not enough to sway your vote, just remember, Debbie Phillips was among those standing alongside the Route 33 Nelsonville Bypass protesting its creation. We desperately need to remove Debbie Phillips from office, and you can make a difference by voting for Yolan Dennis as your new representative.
