The out-of-classroom setting is just as important as the classroom setting
Last Wednesday’s #HandsUpWalkOut rally drew quite a crowd.
So, naturally, the protest against police brutality — in the wake of the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri — was covered on various forms of social media. One of those was Unseen, a popular anonymous picture-sharing app.
One user posted a message claiming some of the rally’s organizers were contradicting their own previous protests against tuition raises by walking out of class, consequently wasting their tuition dollars. The post had more than 100 comments.
We calculated that an in-state student would have lost $24 by walking out of the class. An out-of-state student would have lost about $43.
It’s contradictory at best to claim the protesters wasted money by attending the rally, and in doing so, delegitimizes another cause. Also, let’s be honest, students skip class all the time.
The college experience is about far more than just coursework; it’s about the things you learn outside the classroom as well. And for some students, that could mean protesting a cause that is of national importance.
