As you’re well aware, Athens’ infamous Halloween Block Party is on the horizon.
We’ll be there to enjoy the party — some of us carrying reporter’s notebooks or cameras while donning a crazy costume — along with thousands of our closest friends. It’s going to be a great time, and the fact that we’re staring down a weekend of mid 60s temperatures makes the coming celebration even more enticing.
With that in mind (and at the risk of sounding preachy), we would like to make a brief request of those who are preparing their costumes for the festivities: Please keep them respectful.
The party is a fun time, and meant to bring the community together, but too often do we see costumes that might be offensive to some.
Outfits perpetuating racism and feeding stereotypes — or depicting distasteful news events — is bound to rub some people the wrong way.
In short: Be smart about your costume ideas, and more importantly, have fun.
