Editorial: Dining halls among badly-timed university construction

For the first time yesterday, Ohio University students were offered a sample of the new taste of West Green.

Many students, eating outside of Boyd Dining Hall rather than in it, learned that when the dining hall and its grab-n-go close for construction at the end of the semester, they will have to subside on food served from a kitchen on four wheels.

Although food trucks are all the rage right now in bigger cities — and uptown Athens, for that matter — the timing for this change to campus seems inopportune, especially given the university’s record enrollment.

Construction plans aside, a food truck is probably the best food option for students living on West Green while their dining hall is being revamped. It would be unrealistic to set up a temporary dining hall in another campus building, and forcing students who live there to trek across campus to get a meal would be less than ideal.

We understand that there’s never a good time to tear up a portion of campus — take the recently-completed College Green construction, for example — and know that there are still many details yet to emerge about the food truck and what will come of Boyd Dining Hall when it reopens next fall.

It seems silly the university is starting this construction soon. But at least there will be a viable option for students to get their fill without walking far.
