West Green was lit up Sunday night for the Labor Day weekend “Light Up the Green Barbecue.” The event, planned by Residential Housing and hosted by West Green residents, was held between James and Sargent Halls and drew about 100 students from across campus to celebrate the first long weekend of the semester.
This is the first time West Green has hosted a Labor Day barbecue and event organizers hope it will become an annual program.
Many of the students in attendance were freshmen, looking to expand their friendship circles. Max Wolff, a freshman, said it’s important for students, especially freshmen, to come to the events on campus. “If you don’t get involved in events, then you’ll miss out on opportunities to meet people and hang out,” the communications major said.
The event was planned for students who were not able to go home for the long weekend, said Mac Stricklen, an assistant director of Residential Housing and the head of West Green. The cook-out themed event included music, food and games, all reminiscent of a Labor Day barbecue. “It’s very important for students to get involved on campus,” Stricklen said. “It builds the community and gives students a sense of belonging.”
OU’s residence halls are home to nearly 8,000 students, with most students required to live on campus their first two years. Programs such as Light Up the Green help students feel part of the Ohio University community.
“Everything looks pretty perfect,” said Morgan Parsons, a freshman studying mechanical engineering said. “I would definitely come to another campus event.”
And it might not be long before another event similar to Light up the Green. “We’d like to do something like this close to monthly,” Stricklen said.
