Pedestrian hit by vehicle in Richland Avenue crosswalk

A woman was hit by a vehicle while crossing Richland Avenue on Tuesday morning.

A woman was hit by a vehicle while crossing Richland Avenue on Tuesday morning.

The woman was responsive and had her eyes open, according to Post reporters who were on the scene near Porter Hall.

The Athens and Ohio University police departments, as well as other law enforcement, were on the scene as well.

According to two eyewitnesses, a gray sport utility vehicle was heading south down Richland Avenue toward The Convo when the driver’s brakes apparently gave out.

“A car was coming down the hill and wasn’t stopping," said Alan Sarver, a sophomore who was present for the accident. "I saw (the driver) in the car. He was on the horn."

The driver attempted to swerve to miss the pedestrians in the crosswalk but clipped a woman who fell immediately to the ground, eyewitnesses said.

The woman was almost instantly swarmed by bystanders who tried to help, the eyewitnesses said.

“There was a second of that bystander effect, and then all of the sudden people were like, ‘Oh, wow, there’s a person down,’ ” said Jacob Frommeyer, a freshman who was present for the accident.
