Carter Phillips, senior and former treasurer of Student Senate, walks out of the meeting after his resignation.

OU Student Senate: Treasurer Carter Phillips resigns

OU Student Senate Treasurer Carter Phillips began senate's meeting Wednesday night by resigning.

Student Senate's past two years have seen a number of resignations.

Wednesday night, senate Treasurer Carter Phillips stepped down from the body he has been a part of for four years.

In Phillips resignation speech, which left part of the body on its feet, he said he felt unable to "properly fulfill (his) duties as a student representative," in part because of the actions of last meeting.

Last week four students were arrested for disrupting a lawful meeting.

"We disrupt them when they’re speaking; we chant when they sit down, and we have them arrested for speaking out," Phillips said.

He recommended Zainab Kandeh, Action's presidential candidate, to replace him. Senators appointed Kandeh to fill Phillips' position.

Some senate members acknowledged that there is still a division of parties on the body and called for the body to become a more cohesive body.

Last year, senate also lost its treasurer because of senate turmoil.

Phillips cited this year's "headlines" and "scandals" as reasons for his resignation; LaForest resigned for similar reasons, following President Nick Southall's arrest while on a school-sponsored trip in December.

Southall eventually resigned as president and was replaced by former Vice President Anna Morton
