Student Senate President Megan Marzec states that she “ran on a platform of not representing students, denying this ideal that any one person can represent the thoughts and political views of all people.”

OU faculty to sign letter backing Marzec following 'blood bucket' controversy

A group of faculty are to release a signed a letter Tuesday supporting OU Senate President Megan Marzec's right to express herself.

A group of Ohio University faculty members is set to release a letter Tuesday in support of Student Senate President Megan Marzec's right to express her opinion following her controversial "blood" bucket challenge.

"The letter is going to express support for Megan Marzec and her right to her opinions, and to express those opinions in the way that she did," said Loren Lybarger, an associate professor in the Classics and World Religion department. Lybarger said the letter would also call on the Athens and OU communities to have an "open and honest" debate rather than an intense exchange in hostilities.

Marzec last week released a video — since made private, though The Post has uploaded a copy to its website — in which she poured on herself what she called a "bucket of blood." She later clarified that the bucket actually contained a mix of water, red paint and tomato juice.

“As Student Senate president I am sending a message of student concern of the genocide in Gaza,” she said in the first 10 seconds of the roughly 50-second video. She called on OU to distance itself from what she called “atrocities” in Palestine instigated by Israel.

Since, Marzec has said she has received death threats as many have called for her to resign.

Lybarger, on leave from OU through 2015, told The Post he and a small group of faculty gathered support over the weekend and have received signatures "fairly regularly" since then, though Lybarger added he couldn't give an estimated figure.

The letter has been circulated through a closed web page that has received about 120 unique visits through early Monday evening, he said.
