Flyers soar past Bobcats

Dayton remains undefeated against Ohio.

Keeping with history, Ohio remains winless against Dayton as it dropped its final fixture before the Bobcats enter Mid-American Conference play.

After losing four consecutive matches for the first time in coach Mike Tucker’s 20-year stint with the Flyers, his side picked up a 4-0 win to remain 6-0-0 against Ohio.

But the match’s highlight came from Dayton’s junior forward, Ashley Campbell, who scored a hat trick within the first 35 minutes of play.

The Canadian-international, who played during the U-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup, justified her national call-up with three world class goals to leave Ohio struggling to catch up for the rest of the match.

“When you’ve got someone who’s played in a World Cup, they’re a leader automatically,” Tucker said. “And when you play like that, it’s easy to prove.”

Campbell opened up the scoring in the 23rd minute when a 25-yard attempt, which looked more like a cross than a shot, tucked inside the top corner of the Ohio senior goalkeeper Nicole Amari’s back post to give the Flyers the lead.

She followed up with her second goal in the 32nd minute when a 23-yard strike from the center of the pitch sped into Amari’s lower right corner.

Three minutes later, Campbell completed her hat trick with a volley off a corner into the top left corner.

The loss ends Ohio’s two-game winning streak, as the team finished nonconference play with a 3-5 record.

While the Bobcats flirted with the Dayton goal throughout the match, a disallowed goal from an offside ruling was the Bobcats best chance finding the scoreboard.

Ohio now returns to Chessa Field to close out the rest of the month with a two-game homestead, inviting Akron and Buffalo to begin MAC play.
