Athens City Council preview: Nuisance party amendment will get first reading

A drafted law to change the city's nuisance party ordinance will get its first reading Monday night at Athens City Council.

Athens City Council members will hold their weekly meeting Monday night at 7 p.m. at the City Building, 8 E. Washington Street, where they will be holding a first reading for a drafted law to change to the city's nuisance party ordinance.

As it stands now, changes to the ordinance would increase the fine for disruptive partying from $150 to $250, while reducing the punishment from a criminal to a civil offense.

Council will also be moving forward with purchasing a new fire pumper truck. An ordinance on the agenda would allow service-safety director Paula Horan-Mosely to enter into a contract with Pierce Manufacturing to purchase the truck.

Also on deck are a pair of amendments to the Athens City Code regarding garbage and rubbish.

If passed, these amendments will increase the first offense fine for citizens whose trash overflows from their trash cans from $20 to $50.

Repeat violations would result in an increase in fines of up to $150. It would also set stricter regulations on where residents can store their trash when it is not being picked up.

Other items on the agenda include a stabilization and improvements study for the Athens armory. The study will assess the current condition of the Armory and create an estimate of the money needed to renovate and update the building.
