Bobcat Lane is gonna open, folks.
The road, which connects Richland Avenue to Baker University Center, will be open for six months in a “trial run,” Ohio University announced in a news release on Tuesday.
It wasn’t clear in the release when the road is scheduled to open.
The decision to open the road was based off a “memorandum of understanding” between the City of Athens and the university. It was signed in 2012 and the news release didn’t make it immediately clear why it took two years to put into effect.
“We are a victim of our own success, and the current configuration on campus does not adequately support the mission of inter-city transit,” Mayor Wiehl said, “By relocating the drop-off/pick-up location we hope that it will address both safety and health issues for the riders.”
The popularity of GoBus and recent transit studies “prioritized the initiative,” the release states, but doesn’t clarify what those studies were and for whom the results forced to prioritize opening the road.
