A 19-month-old boy was killed Friday in a single-car crash on Ohio Route 56 west of Athens, according to a report by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The driver of the pickup truck involved in the crash died later in the evening at a Columbus hospital.
Darrell J. Young II, a 24-year-old Athens resident, died after he was flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, according to the report.
At about 8 p.m., hospital representatives notified the Athens Ohio State Highway Patrol Post that Young died as a result of the injuries that he sustained in the crash.
The toddler who died was identified in the report as Tyler H. Young. Tyler Young was wearing a seatbelt, but the driver was not — and he was ejected from the truck.
Darrell Young, who was driving a 1999 Nissan pickup truck, was heading west on Rt. 56 before he drove off to the left of the road and struck a tree, according to the report. The crash is being investigated by State Highway Patrol officers.
