Baseball: Ohio finishes final midweek game of season with loss

In their final midweek matchup of the season, the Bobcats were unable to secure a victory on the road against Eastern Kentucky.

The Bobcats fell to 0-8 on the season in midweek games, where they were outscored by a grand total of 66-23.

The team did come within one run of defeating the Colonels, which was the sixth time that they were edged by only one run this season. The Bobcats outhit Eastern Kentucky 13-9, making it the 10th time this season that they registered 10 or more hits.

Ohio’s midweek pitching struggles continued, as they used eight different pitchers throughout the contest, who allowed eight earned runs on just nine hits.

Freshman pitcher Matt Mikolajczak suffered the loss in his first decision of the season after allowing two earned runs on one hit in two thirds of an inning pitched.

During the beginning of the game, Ohio got the start that they wanted, as they got off to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and a half. Eastern Kentucky answered right back in the bottom of the second inning, as they chased Ohio senior starting pitcher Sean Kennedy out of the game when they crossed the plate five times, giving them a two-run lead at the time.

Ohio wasn’t quite done yet.

In the fourth and fifth innings, the Bobcats clawed back in the game and tied it at five runs apiece. The Colonels re-claimed the lead immediately in the bottom of the fifth inning and didn’t look back.

The Bobcats gave it an effort to climb back into the game, but the Colonels didn’t allow Ohio to string together enough offense late in the game for the Bobcats to break their midweek losing ways.

Freshman infielder Connor Callery recorded a career-high three hits, one run and an RBI. The game marked his second multi-hit game of the season.

Four Bobcats added two hits each and junior infielder John Adryan and freshman catcher Anthony Winters led the two with two RBIs apiece.

The Bobcats finish their season with a three-game series at home against in-state rival Miami this weekend
